After Bartolomé de las Casas, his adversary in the Valladolid debate, the humanist and historian of Charles V, Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda, is now also represented in the Digital Collection of Sources: with his «Apología pro libro de iustis belli causis» (1552).

The «Book on the Just Causes of War» referred to in the title is Sepúlveda’s «Democrates Alter», a treatise presented in dialogue form on the justification of the Spanish right of conquest in America, which was not allowed to be printed primarily because of harsh criticism and prominent negative opinions from the universities of Salamanca and Alcalá. Only the «Apología» made it into print and thus remained the only printed source for Sepúlveda’s colonial political ideas until the early 20th century.

After the introduction to his editing and translation project in March 2019 [https://blog.salamanca.school/de/2019/03/11/salamanca-kolloquium-observaciones-sobre-edicion-critica-de-melchor-cano-metodos-y-subsidios-para-el-trabajo/], Juan Belda Plans will be once again a guest at the Salamanca Colloquium. This time he presents the results of his work in Frankfurt: the completed critical edition of the Relectio de Poenitentia (1549) by Melchor Cano, published in 2020, with Spanish translation.

The Colloquium will be held in Spanish.

(English) The School of Salamanca: New Digital Edition of Diego de Avendaño’s «Thesaurus Indicus, Vol. 1» now online

Diego de Avendaño (1594-1688) was born in Segovia. During his studies in Seville, he met Juan de Solórzano Pereira and accompanied him to the New World. Avendaño continued his studies in Lima at the Colegio San Martín of the Jesuits, joined the order himself and taught and led the Jesuitic colleges and universities in Cuzco, Charcas and Lima in the following decades. After, as he himself said, «almost fifty years in Peru» he published his main work, the six-volume Thesaurus Indicus, in which he discusses a wealth of questions of secular administration and spiritual practice. All six volumes will appear successively in the Digital Collection of Sources of the project «The School of Salamanca». A start has now been made with the first volume devoted to the questions of the secular regiment of Peru in the 16th and early 17th centuries.

Melchor Cano (1509-1560) is one of the most important authors of the School of Salamanca: as a pupil of Francisco de Vitoria, he entered the Dominican Order at the age of fifteen. Ten years later, Cano received his first theological chair in Valladolid; after the death of his academic teacher Vitoria in 1546 he took over the renowned cátedra de Prima in Salamanca himself. Cano participated in the political debates about the Spanish conquest of the Americas, among other things as a commission member in the so-called controversy of Valladolid, in which the different points of view clashed in the persons of the protagonists Bartolomé de Las Casas and Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda.

In 1547, one year after becoming professor in Salamanca, Cano held the public lecture De Poenitentia, in which he dealt with central questions of confession and the sacrament of penance. The elaborated version of this unusually long and detailed text, which comprises more than 170 printed pages, he prepared for publication in 1550. This first edition is now available in full text and digital images in the source collection of the project «The School of Salamanca».

Domingo Báñez (1528-1604) was one of the most influential authors of the School of Salamanca: a disciple of Melchor Cano, Báñez joined the Dominican order at the age of eighteen and became one of the most influential Spanish Theologians of the 16th century. „De Iustitia et Iure Decisiones“ stands in the literary tradition begun by Domingo de Soto and is considered a pivotal work of the Iberian Scholastic. Now the full text and digital images of the edition printed 1594 in Salamanca are available online in open access on the website of the project „The School of Salamanca. A Digital Collection of Sources and a Dictionary of its Juridical-Political Language“.

The latest publication in the Digital Collection of Sources edited by the Salamanca project was one of the standards works of reference regarding the colonial administration of the Spanish Americas: Juan de Solórzano Pereira’s Politica Indiana draws the sum of the author’s rich experience in administrative and judicial matters in the Spanish colonies. The full text of this seminal book (printed in Madrid in 1648) is now available online and in open access on the project’s website.

We are very happy to announce that our Vitoria trilogy is now complete: the «Summa Sacramentorum» (1561), compiled by Tomas de Chávez from the master’s lessons, is now online in our Digital Collection of Sources. Together with Vitoria’s ”Relectiones” and his ”Confessionario”, the Collection offers now access to the three works that made the teaching’s of the School of Salamanca’s founding figure accessible in early modern print.

(English) The School of Salamanca: A Case of Global Knowledge Production? Conference, 24-26 October 2018, Buenos Aires

In 2018, the university of Salamanca celebrates its 800th anniversary, an event not only of Castilian or Spanish importance, but with world-wide reverberations. From the beginning of the 16th century until the 18th century, the so-called School of Salamanca shaped the juridical-political discourse and language of the two great Iberian empires, with its characteristic intertwining of science, jurisprudence, religion, and politics. Theology, philosophy, jurisprudence, natural sciences owe substantial innovations to this group of Spanish, Portuguese and American thinkers whose impact was never limited by frontiers of countries, continents, or religious denominations. In East and West traces of their thinking and teaching can be found. Universities followed the Salmantine curriculum; in America and Asia, texts from Salamanca were studied, excerpted, copied, and new works were written, based on the principles, content and scientific practices of this school. Without the American and Asian experiences and voices, modern jurisprudence, philosophy and theology, as we know them, would not exist.

For a long time, this world-wide significance of the school of Salamanca was understood as a phenomenon of the reception, in which the American and Asian actors appeared only as passive recipients of European knowledge and normativity. However, processes of global interactions are brought into focus by recent researches in the fields of legal history, philosophy, and history of knowledge. “Salamanca“ thus becomes a point of intersection in a world-encompassing network of normative knowledge production.

Normative systems which had deep roots in European history and traditions were replicated, complemented, changed, and adapted to local needs – and then reflected back to Spain, to Europe.  In the American context, the production of knowledge had to face new challenges: the encounter with hitherto unknown peoples and religions, the geographical distance to Europe and the enormous dimension of the American continent itself were only a few of them. Such external factors enabled and forced Spanish and Portuguese jurists, theologians, and philosophers to leave the well-trodden paths of medieval tradition and to find new answers for the new questions of a new time. Authors, books, and ideas then found their way back to Europe, into the lecture halls of the universities as well as into the session chambers of political bodies. The discourse about a law of nations and universal human rights began in the so-called School of Salamanca and is only the best-known example for the fundamental role the American experiences played in the development of a modern Europe.

The Conference shall provide an opportunity to reflect about how this normative knowledge was produced, with an especial attention on the American parts of the Iberian monarchies of the 16-18th centuries: in university lectures and writings, but also in political and/or juridical decisions. What was the institutional framework of knowledge production, and how did it influence the results? How to analyze the process of knowledge production under the perspectives of cultural translation and textuality? – Such questions can only be answered on a broad fundament of microhistorical studies of actors, practices, knowledge reservoirs, and institutions. As a result, we may expect a new, richly shaded image of the School of Salamanca’s global significance.
